Today at SEAOC we heard from Jan Dougalas of KPFF. In addition to sponsoring a wonderful lunch, Jan spoke about interdisciplinary work and best practices for building construction. Jan's experience in working with many different disciplines gives her a unique perspective on practical processes of clash detection and how a variety of subcontractors and architects think about building design. This Thursday our SEAOC members heard from Carole Moore from Cal Poly's Career Services. She spoke with students about building a résumé and making good impressions. Carole is a resource to all Cal Poly students and can meet with students one-on-one to prepare for professional events like job interviews. ARCE students are encouraged to meet with an advisor at the Career Services building in preparation for Structural Forum. Please schedule a meeting time with them before dropping by. Today at SEAOC, we heard from ARCE alum Mark Haselton. Mark has been very generous with both CAED and the ARCE department in the past and even sponsored the lab formerly known as F Lab (now the Haselton Design Lab). Today, Mark spoke about his experiences in the the ARCE program and completing his senior project, the blade structure in Poly Canyon. Mark also spoke briefly about the reconstruction of the blade structure and changes they made to the original design. Finally, Mark spoke about the prestressed concrete structure his firm built for the Olympic swimming pool in Georgia. As an added bonus, how many of you knew that Mark is an avid car enthusiast? Today at SEAOC, Kim Robinson from Star Seismic spoke to students about buckling restrained braces. Star Seismic is a proprietary company who works with engineers, architects, and builders in order to produce special lateral resisting systems for use in seismic areas. Kim covered many topics related to the braces including types of braces, manufacturing, testing, shapes and sizes, advantages and disadvantages, and answered questions Florian Barth 01/05/2012
Today at SEAOC we heard from Florian Barth, President of the American Concrete Institute and Co-Chair of the Joint Sustainability Initiative. Barth provided students with information about sustainable building practices and the advantages and disadvantages of new and renovated buildings. Michelle Kam-Biron and Grace S. Kang 01/05/2012
Today, we heard presentations from both Michelle Kam-Biron and Grace S. Kang. Michelle Kam-Biron, SE is the Senior Technical Director at WoodWorks. She spoke with students about how industry is related to practice and works to facilitate new and innovative solutions in our field. Grace Kang, SE is a Principal at Forell/Elsesser Engineers, Inc. Today she talked about some innovative solutions that her firm has devised. Both speakers highlighted possible career paths for students and provided unique views as a result of their many years in the industry. Thanksgiving! 11/17/2011

It's the 7th week, everyone! That means it's time to take a break from homework and exams and join SEAOC in the courtyard for a BBQ. There's only a few pictures this week (who likes to have their picture taken while he is eating?) but you can check them out here. It's that time of the year again! This week at SEAOC, we held a pumpkin carving competition. We saw some very creative designs (as we do every year) and Christine and Melissa acted as our impartial judges. First place was given out in three categories: Most Creative, Cutest, and Scariest. This week at SEAOC we took some time for a friendly competition. The challenge was to create the longest spanning cantilever made of just spaghetti and tape. The winners (pictured) projected their structure out 54 inches! check out more photos of the competition here. |
