Fall End of the Quarter Party 12/06/2009
The Friday of dead week, SEAOC members migrated to Downtown Brew to enjoy the traditional end of the quarter party. The students got to relax, kick back, and de-stress from final submittals. A fantastic time was had by all, and our old friend Carrie even came to catch up with everyone! Add Comment San Francisco Trip 11/09/2009
A group of SEAOC members ventured north for a weekend to enjoy the great city of San Francisco. The group visited the UCSF stem cell research lab with associates from Forrell/Elsesser Engineers. Later the students visited ARUP and got a feel for what a structural engineering office is like. As a break from engineering the group visited the De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park. The students also took a boat tour of the bay as another way to see the city. All in all a fun, educational, enriching weekend was had by all. WOW BBQ 09/20/2009
During Cal Poly’s Week of Welcome, ARCE freshmen had a great time getting to know the SEAOC board and faculty members. This was a great time for the freshmen to meet older students and hear more about the ARCE program at Cal Poly. SEAOC’s EPIC Summer 07/08/2009
Members of SEAOC put on a club event for the Engineering Possibilities In College (EPIC) camp held at Cal Poly. Members of the board talked to the high school students about what the architectural engineering program is, how it differs from civil engineering, and what a structural engineer does. The students got to add lateral bracing to a model and then test it on the shake table to see how their bracing would hold. The high school students said they enjoyed the activity and some were very eager to apply to the ARCE program here at Poly! All in all it was a fun afternoon of structural engineering! Spring Break Trip – Boston 03/21/2009
The 2009 SEAOC Spring break trip was a fun filled week to Boston, MA. Ten students along with two ARCE advisors attended the trip. While the locals of Boston thought the idea of a group of California kids back East for spring break was crazy, everyone survived the chilling weather and had a great time. During the week, the group got to experience a wide variety of activities. Walking the freedom trail, Quincy Market, touring old churches and the Boston Public library, and the famous Duck Tours were some of the historically educational activities for the week. Along with history also came entertainment. The SEAOC group got to see the Boston Celtics beat the LA Clippers and tour America’s Oldest ball field- Fenway Park. The group also visited the Fine Arts Museum and saw a Broadway performance of Dirty Dancing. In the midst of all of the tourist attractions of Boston, the group also got a taste of engineering in the city. The SEAOC group visited the Boston office of Wiss Janey & Elstner where they learned about the retrofit and repairs of delicate and historical structures. Later on, the Arup office hosted the group and shared about the firm and its engineering role in the city of Boston as well as globally. Despite the food poisoning and missing Identification back in LAX, the trip overall was great. Thanks again to our sponsors: Wiss Janey & Elstner, KPFF Consulting Engineers, Simpson Strong Tie, Degenkolb, Miyomoto, and Hope Engineering. Thanks for making this trip possible.
