Rachel Martin of Simpson Strong Tie visited us today at SEAOC. Martin (alumna of 2005) spoke about how she and her classmates got to where they are now since graduating from Cal Poly. She is a strong advocate that graduating from the ARCE program does not mean that you have to work for a design firm. Some career paths she highlighted today were several teaching routes, plan checking, traditional design firms, international opportunities, and of course, manufacturing.

Don't forget that this Saturday is the Simpson Strong Tie Symposium. The event starts at 7am in Fisher Science (includes free breakfast!) and will continue into the early afternoon in the Simpson Strong Tie Demonstration Lab (includes free tri-tip lunch!). So please, sign-up in the ARCE or CM office and come out to join us in a day of learning, eating, and breaking stuff with Rachel and her coworkers.

Mike Milazzo visited the ARCE department once again this year to present the department with $10,000 from Fluor (pictured is Alex Daddow, president elect, accepting the check). Fluor Corporation has been a loyal supporter of the department for many years. Their donations help fund student leadership trips to conferences, student expenses for senior projects, two large scholarships for students, and all the ACI references for students taking Concrete Lecture/Design among many other things. The ARCE department (and SEAOC) would like to give a huge thank you to Fluor for their continued support of our department.

Today, SEAOCers heard from Daniel Bastio of Rutherford and Chekene out of San Francisco. R+C did the structural engineering work for the retrofit of piers 15 and 17 in San Francisco in preparation for the Exploratorium's relocation to the waterfront. Bastio spoke about previous retrofits of these piers and about structural damage caused by environmental sources.

Bastio is an ARCE alumnus from 2004, you may recognize his senior project - the giant steel sculpture in the courtyard of Engineering West.

This week at SEAOC, we were lucky enough to hear from Stephen Hicks, a plan checker for San Luis Obispo County. Hicks provided a new and unique perspective on building engineering and safety. In addition to an extensive career as an architect and code consultant Hicks has been working on the county side of construction for many years now and has a thorough understanding of why codes exist and what catastrophes can occur when codes are broken.

In the winter, SEAOC held a racquetball tournament for all our ARCE students and today we finally rewarded our champion! Last quarter's champion was none other than our Department Head, Al Estes. Pictured is the event coordinator, Andrew Jimenez, awarding Al with his very own, custom sweat band, embroidered with "Al the Champ" in gold.

This week at SEAOC we heard from Joe LaBrie. LaBrie is the president of his own company, MakeitRight, Inc. Today he spoke to us about the work he has done in engineering hospitals and how he opened his own shake table business in order to ensure safety and operations of equipment in the presence of a seismic event. In addition to describing his work, LaBrie also highlighted real world advice for soon-to-be-graduates and discussed what is expected of new hires and what new hires should expect from their employers.

This week at SEAOC, we heard from one of our very own, Professor Craig Baltimore. As many of our members know, Baltimore is well connected to the goings on of the world of masonry as well as earthquake engineering for these structures. Today he gave us a presentation about recent earthquakes in New Zealand, why it may appear that they are occurring more frequently, and how we as engineers should respond to large earthquakes and failures of structural systems. In addition to discussing earthquake engineering practices, Baltimore also highlighted some study abroad opportunities down under for structural engineering students.

This week we heard from department head Al Estes in his State of the Department Address. In addition to presenting budget information, we also held a discussion of the Student Success Fee (vote on the SSF on My Cal Poly Portal on Tuesday February 28th) and curriculum changes. Al also handed out prizes for last year's photo contest. First and third place went to professor John Lawson (it was rigged!) and second place went to student Yoni Sadka (pictured). Today at SEAOC we heard from Jan Dougalas of KPFF. In addition to sponsoring a wonderful lunch, Jan spoke about interdisciplinary work and best practices for building construction. Jan's experience in working with many different disciplines gives her a unique perspective on practical processes of clash detection and how a variety of subcontractors and architects think about building design.
